CRATES

Crates are QuantumRift’s loot-box feature — buy or earn a crate key, bring it to the Crate Master, and spin an animated reel for a randomized reward. They’re cosmetics-first: most of what you can win is pets, trails, auras, and other visual flair, with Credits, Tokens, and rare chat Tags mixed in.

There are four rarity tiers: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary.

Getting Crate Keys

Crate keys are ordinary inventory items — one item type per tier. They can be carried, given to other players, and sold on the flea market just like any other item.

Buy with Tokens

Head to the Tokens store (/store or /tokens, KEYS tab) to buy keys directly:

Tier Cost Item Color
Common Crate Key 5 Tokens Tripwire Hook Gray
Rare Crate Key 15 Tokens Golden Horse Armor Light Blue
Epic Crate Key 30 Tokens Diamond Horse Armor Magenta
Legendary Crate Key 50 Tokens Netherite Ingot Orange

Tokens are QuantumRift’s monetization currency — earn them passively (1 Token per 10 minutes played), receive them from an admin, or buy them with real money.

Earn free keys from Rank Eggs

Redeeming a paid Rank Egg delivers a one-time bundle of crate keys straight to your inventory, along with the message “Rank crate keys delivered — visit the Crate Master to open them.”

Rank Egg Cost Crate Keys Granted
Citizen (free/default) None
Hero 100 Tokens 1× Common
Mercenary 250 Tokens 2× Common
Aurora 350 Tokens 3× Rare
Legend 450 Tokens 5× Epic
Imperial 500 Tokens 10× Legendary

These bonuses don’t stack across ranks the way passive perks do — each rank-up grants its own one-time bundle, separate from the others.

Opening a Crate

Find the Crate Master NPC in the Ship starting-area lobby (world “world”, roughly -6.5, 64.0, -8.5).

There are two ways to interact with the Crate Master:

  • Holding a key, right-click the NPC — opens that exact key immediately, skipping straight to the reveal animation.
  • Empty-handed, right-click the NPC — opens the Crate Master menu, a tier picker showing all four tiers along with how many keys of each you currently hold (“Keys held: N”). Click a tier you have a key for to consume one and start the reveal. If you have no keys at all, the menu reminds you to buy some from the Tokens store.

The picker comes in two forms depending on your client — a modern cursor-based screen (labeled “CRATE MASTER” — “Bring crate keys here to open them”) if you have the resource pack and cursor engine active, or a classic 3-row chest menu titled “Crate Master” as the automatic fallback. Both lead to the exact same reveal — nothing is missed either way. The center icon in both is an Ender Chest with the lore “Bring crate keys here to open them.” / “Hold a key and right-click me to open it directly.”

What happens when you open one

  • One key is deducted from your inventory the moment you commit — either by right-clicking with a key in hand, or by picking a tier in the menu.
  • Your reward is granted to your account (wallet, cosmetics, or tags) before the reveal animation even plays. That means if you disconnect mid-spin or close the menu early, you still keep your prize — nothing is lost by leaving.
  • If a key is consumed but the roll somehow fails to grant anything, the game automatically returns your key and tells you: “Crate open failed — your key has been returned.”
  • If something goes wrong that the game isn’t sure about, you’ll see: “Crate open failed and staff have been alerted. Do not open another until they have looked at it.” There’s a staff safety net, so a botched open should never mean a silently lost key.

The Reveal

Opening a crate plays out in an animated slot-reel menu titled “Opening <Tier> Crate”:

  • A row of item icons scrolls sideways across a 9-wide reel (adjustable, always an odd number so there’s one exact center slot).
  • Green and markers flank the center slot, showing exactly where the reel will land.
  • The reel is filled with a mix of decoy icons — other possible rewards from that tier — plus your real winning icon, so the spin feels lively. Unrevealed slots show a “?”.
  • By default the animation runs 36 frames, ticking every 2 game-ticks, and eases to a stop over the final 6–8 frames — a classic “slowing down” slot machine feel.
  • A click sound plays on every tick, and a level-up-style sound plays when it lands.
  • On landing: the winning item gets an enchant-glint shimmer and shows its real name, a firework burst blooms around you, and you get a chat message: “You won: **<reward name>** in gold.
  • If the win includes a guaranteed bonus tag (see Legendary below), you’ll also get an aqua line: “Bonus tag unlocked: **<TAG_ID>**.
  • If your roll would have been a cosmetic you already own — and you’ve collected every unowned option left in that tier — you’ll instead see a yellow message that your collection is complete and you were refunded Tokens instead.
  • The reel is purely visual — clicking items in it does nothing, since your prize is already locked in. Closing the menu early costs you nothing.
  • The firework flourish can be turned off server-side, but is on by default.

Duplicate Protection

Crates never “waste” a key on something you already own:

  • If your roll lands on a cosmetic you already have, the game automatically rerolls among only the cosmetics in that tier you don’t own yet.
  • If you already own every cosmetic in that tier, you get a Token refund instead — shown as a “duplicate refund” in the reveal and flagged in chat.

Refund amounts scale with tier:

Tier Duplicate Refund
Common 2 Tokens
Rare 5 Tokens
Epic 10 Tokens
Legendary 20 Tokens

What You Can Win

Every tier’s loot pool blends Cosmetics, Credits, Tokens, and (Legendary only) Chat Tags. Cosmetics make up most of the weight in every tier — crates are built around collecting cosmetic flair, with currency payouts as a secondary prize. All entries below are shown with their relative pull weight (higher = more likely).

First-open bonus: the very first Legendary crate you ever open also grants a guaranteed bonus chat tag, CRATE_OPENER — in addition to whatever your roll produces. This is a one-time bonus tracked per player.

Economy Notes

  • Credits are QuantumRift’s main currency; Tokens are the separate monetization currency spent on cosmetics, rank eggs, and crate keys; Tags are cosmetic name-badges shown in chat.
  • Credit wins display compactly in chat, e.g. “83 Credits.”
  • Token wins display as “N Tokens” (or “N Tokens (duplicate refund)” for a dup payout).
  • Cosmetic wins show their real in-game display name.
  • Opening crates also counts toward lifetime crate-count milestones in the tag system — the more crates you open over time, the more milestone tags you can unlock, independent of the Legendary first-open bonus tag.

Good to Know

  • Your prize is locked in before the animation plays — disconnecting or closing the menu mid-spin never costs you your reward.
  • A failed open (no reward granted) automatically returns your key.
  • A staff safety net exists for anything the game can’t be sure went right, so a botched open should never mean a silently lost key.
